Heavy showers lash State capital

HIGH velocity winds accompanied with heavy showers lashed Raipur bringing the city to a standstill in the evening on Friday. The dusty thunderstorm with maximum wind speed measuring 35 KMPH followed with heavy showers recording 10mm rainfall forced people to run for shelter as the rains lashed the city for nearly an hour. Disruption of power supply in many parts of the city and overflowing of chocked drains made the situation worse. Despite, traffic movement touching the bare minimum level; motorists faced tough time as the visibility got poor due to the gushing wind accompanied by rains. People on foot and in two-wheelers and bicycles were stranded at many places waiting for the heavy showers to subside. During the weather fury, internet and cellular services were also partially affected. In many places, basic telephone services of both private and state-owned BSNL, was reported to have developed snag and remained dysfunctional, causing lots of inconvenience to individuals as well as organizations in the larger context. 

India Meteorological Department (IMD) official said, with maximum wind velocity of 30-35 kmph, the gusty winds remained for half an hour. The storm hit the capital around 3.45pm and continued till 5pm, said the official. As it raised thick clouds of dust, the high velocity winds caused serious problems for pedestrians and motorists. It became difficult to see even a short distance because of blowing dust followed by heavy showers.

According to the Met Center, Raipur, an upper air cyclonic circulation persists over West Central to Central Madhya Pradesh and the neighbouring areas at a high of 1.5 KM. At the same time, a trough is passing in East to West direction from West Rajasthan to Jharkhand through North Chhattisgarh on Friday. Under the influence of these two systems, rainfall or thundershowers is likely at some places in Southern region and at isolated places in rest areas in the state on Saturday. There is also warning of thundershowers accompanied by high velocity winds expected at some places across the state. The sky will be mainly clear with chances of cloudy conditions in the evening followed with drizzles in Raipur on Saturday.
