Staff Reporter,

THREE workers allegedly died of asphyxiation when they were attempting to clear sludge from a well at a residential apartment behind Empress Mall in Ganeshpeth area on Saturday afternoon.

The deceased were identified as Deepak Mahadeorao Gawte (45), a resident of Sugat Nagar; Chandrashekhar Barapatre (40) and Ajay Garodi (45), both also from city.

According to police, a contractor had engaged services of the workers for desilting the well. They were lowered into the well one-by-one with the help of a rope and untethered. After some time, they suffered suffocation due to carbon dioxide present at bottom of the well. One of them shouted for help while two others fell unconscious. Immediately, co-workers called Fire & Emergency Services of Nagpur Municipal Corporation and police. A rescue team arrived at the spot and started operation.

The rescue team pulled three workers out of the well quickly and rushed them to Government Medical College & Hospital where the doctors declared them dead. Sensing trouble, the petty contractor allegedly fled the spot.
Staff from Ganeshpeth Police Station led by Senior Inspector Sunil Gangurde also visited the site. Some office-bearers of Rahavasi Sankul Society also visited the hospital.

Ganeshpeth police have registered the case under Section 304 and other relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code against the unidentified contractor.
