About 40,000 people of Basna Nagar Panchayat are reeling under severe drinking water crisis as summer sets in. The two overhead tanks – each having capacity of 1 lakh litres and 1.50 lakh litres respectively, constructed for the distribution of drinking water among the residents turned out to be of no use with the agency concerned in the Nagar Panchayat paying no attention towards filling these tanks with waterConstructed with Rs 5 crore some six years back, the two water tanks have turned into show piece for people. Reason is stated to be lack of arrangements to fill water in these tanks for further supply of water to residents.

The tanks were constructed in the year 2012. However, the Nagar Panchayat for is yet to arrange source of water to fill the overhead tanks. One tank is behind bus stand while the other one is situated at High School ground. In the meantime, new chief municipal officer took charge, but the situation remains the same. It is learnt that the overhead tanks have fallen prey to the lackadaisical attitude of nagar panchayat officials who had not done proper paper works in the water supply project.

It is also reported that no alternate steps have been taken for overcoming the problem of drinking water despite several reminders to the officers through different mediums. As per information, there are many wards where bore wells have dried up. People in these wards can be seen filling water through tanks.Chief Municipal Officer Dinesh Yadav agreed of being aware of the issue. He said that Public Health Engineering department constructed tanks worth Rs 5 crore but no arrangements were made for filling these tanks with water. Even there is no information available about extension of pipe lines, he added.
