Total response to ‘Etapalli Bandh’against mining at Surjagad hills

‘Etapalli Bandh’ that was observed on Friday by Janhitvadi Samiti, Berozgar Sangathana, Traders Association and Aheri Zilla Kriti Samiti in protest against the mining of Surjagad hills and to support the 87-day old indefinite chain hunger strike evoked total response with all the shops and business establishments in the town remaining closed for the whole day.
A memorandum demanding immediate stoppage of the mining activities being done by the Lloyd Metals Company from the Surjagad hills was submitted to Tehsildar. The oher demands raised in the memorandum included the Gram Sabhas be given compensation of the loss of forest and environment, a steel plant be raised in Etapalli –Allapalli area, local people should be given employment in this plant by giving them due training, excavation of iron ore from the Surjagad hills and its transportation out of district be stopped until the plant is raised, separate Aheri district be established etc.Suresh Barsagade, Chief of Janhitvadi Samiti, who has been leading the agitation, said the Chief Minister and other public representatives of the district should keep their promises regarding opening the steel plant in the district itself.The agitation will be intensified further if no cognizance of the present hunger strike and bandh is taken seriously by the Government, he warned.
