People bid tearful adieu to Basketball Coach Rajesh Patel

A large number of people including several from sports fraternity, VIPs, politicians and social activists bid tearful adieu to International Coach, Rajesh Patel here on Wednesday. It may be recalled that Basketball Coach, Rajesh Patel, known as the ‘Dronacharya of Basketball’ passed away on Monday after suffering cardiac arrest at Panipath, while he was escorting his team to Ludhiana. He was 62 years of age. As per the sources, Patel suffered chest pain and on complaint, he was immediately rushed to hospital where he was declared as brought dead.


Earlier his funeral procession was taken out from his residence Surya Bhawan, Sector-1 on Wednesday morning and his last rites was performed at Ramnagar Muktidham Bhilai. While reminiscing the time spent with him and his invaluable contribution towards the field of Basketball game, several sports personalities and officials from steel City such as Cricketer Rajesh Chauhan, Olympian, Rajendra Prasad, SR Jakhad, Rajiv Jain, Gopal Khandelwal and others have said that Patel was an integral part of sports fraternity, his loss is irreparable, and the vacuum that has been created in basketball game will never be filled. He was the man behind the discovery and development of several star players, who are currently in India’s national women squad that achieved many international awards and medals. He had the credit of achieving many state level and national level awards comprising of Vikram Puraskar, Vishwamitra Puraskar, Veer Hanuman Singh Puraksar, SAIL Best Player Award, National Sports Time Award to name a few. A condolence meet has been organized for paying homage to Basketball Coach, Rajesh Patel at Open Air Theater, Civic Centre, Bhilai on Thursday morning 7:00 am.
