Staff Reporter,

It was a Saturday with a cause. The dry bed of lake at village Khandala was absorbed by the sweat of human resolve, drop by drop. The men, the machine, and the spirit all worked wonder and the silt accumulated in the lake-bed for 25 years was removed to a great extent. At the end of the day, the 2.50 hectares of lake-bed was not only deepened but also widened.

The activity also marked the launch of ‘Galmukta Dharan, Galyukta Sheti’ (silt-free dam, fertile soil in farms). Ashwin Mudgal, District Collector, led the ‘Mahashramdaan’ in which 800 employees of Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL), Revenue Department, Zilla Parishad, and the villagers participated with enthusiasm.

All of them toiled under the blazing summer Sun. Rafique Sheikh, Chief Engineer, and Bhalchandra Khandait, Regional Director, led the MSEDCL employees in the big effort.

Khandala faces water scarcity every year as the village lake dries up after March. Considering the problem faced by villagers, Suraj Waghmare, Sub-Divisional Officer, decided to take up a drive to desilt the lake and increase its depth to eventually increase storage capacity. Rafique Sheikh offered help on behalf of MSEDCL and he asked 800 employees to participate in the drive, apart from making available excavators. MSEDCL also made available vehicles to carry the silt removed from the lake to 100 farms nearby. The drive is stated to have saved Rs 15 lakh of the Government.

The lake spread over 2.50 hectares was constructed 25 years ago. It was an important source of drinking water for the village, and also for recharge of wells. However, over the years, its capacity had reduced to 8 thousand cubic metres (TCM) and the lake used to dry up after March.
Following the removal of 3,000 cubic metres of silt, deepening and widening of lake, the storage capacity of the lake is expected to increase to 20 TCM.

Mudgal also interacted with the people and appealed to them to join hands in water conservation efforts. The drive ‘Galmukta Dharan, Galyukta Sheti’ aims at not only removing silt from lakes or dams but also at making available this fertile layer of soil to farmers in nearby areas. He directed the officials concerned to implement the drive in all villages in the district. Rafique Sheikh also assured to participate in such efforts.
