2 hardcore Naxal commanders gunned down in exchange fire

TWO hardcore Naxal commanders were gunned down during an exchange of fire between the security forces and ultras recently. The slain extremists have been identified as ACM Member Rakesh and DCM Member Sanjeeb informed police sources.According to police sources, following an intelligence inputs regarding the presence of armed CPI (Maoist) cadres in Magur forest under Bender II Reserve Forest near village Dudukornal under Belapada Police Station of district Bolangira joint anti-naxalite operation was planned and launched with one unit of DVF and one unit of SOG under the leadership of K Siba Subramani, IPS, SP, Bolangir.

At around 1 am on Saturday, when the operation teams were approaching the area, a group of 8-10 armed CPI (Maoist) in olive green uniform was spotted. When the operation teams asked them to surrender before the police and not to indulge in anti- national and unlawful activities, the members of the banned CPI (Maoist) fired indiscriminately at the Security Forces (SOG, DVF). Finding no other way out, the Security Forces retaliated, leading to a fierce gun battle. Soon, the outlaws fled into forest, taking advantage of the darkness. During the post-encounter search of the area, the Security Forces recovered bodies of two slain ultras identified as Sanjeeb of Puarti village under Jagargunda police station in district Sukma (Chhattisgarh) and Rakesh of Chhattisgarh.

According to police, Sanjeeb, a Divisional Committee Member (DCM), was carrying cash reward of Rs 5 lakh on his head. Rakesh, an Area Committee Member (ACM) was carrying a cash reward of Rs 4 lakh on his head. Along with the bodies of the slain outlaws, the security forces also recovered one AK- 47 rifle with 2 magazines and 3 rounds of live ammunition, one INSAS rifle with 2 magazines and 24 rounds of live ammunition, one navigation compass, one big knife besides other materials. It is apprehended that some more CPI (Maoist) cadres might have injured in this exchange of fire. Elimination of two hardened senior cadres of CPI (Maoist) is being considered a big blow to the banned outfit and will curtail their activities to a large extent which was hitherto going on unchecked. At the same time, the successful operation is a big boost to the confidence of the Security Forces as well as the people of the area.
