The Indian traditional family system and marriage institution, has remained a major attraction for the entire world for a very long time. Those boasting of Indian tradition and culture, still criticise celebrations like International Family Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Valentine Day etc. But looking to the fast changes in traditional Indian family system, it is important to discuss relevance of celebrating these days appears necessary.


Disintegration of Joint Family System has resulted in discussion at various levels on advantages and disadvantages of Joint Family and Nuclear Family System in India. The Indian society is in the transition period from Joint Family to Nuclear Family, but has been confronted with different social issues.


Economic needs for preferring nuclear family is a major reason for disintegration of the joint family system. From traditional agricultural society has changed with individual skill development in various fields. The International Family Day holds importance in the situation when even husband and wife are living at distant places and meet once in a week, fortnight or even after several months. Although not celebrated on any fixed date or day, family get together has gained importance in Indian society and is planned well in advance.


Family Day celebrations began when a class of workers were required to go to distant places for earning bread and butter. Different countries celebrated the day on different dates. In 1994 when International Year of Family was announced by UN, May 15, was declared as International Family Day. The day is celebrated with different themes since 1995.


United States. Family Day is a state holiday in Nevada, celebrated on the day after Thanks-giving, i.e. the Friday following the fourth Thursday in November. American Family Day is a state holiday in Arizona is celebrated on the first Sunday in August since 1978.


Family Day is a national effort to promote family dinners as an effective way to reduce youth substance abuse and other risky behaviors. The research on growing addiction and youth abuse was detected by Columbia University.
Family Day is observed in the Canadian provinces of Alberta, Ontario, Saskatchewan, and New Brunswick on the third Monday of February. In British Columbia, Family Day falls on the second Monday of February. This holiday celebrates the importance of families and family life to people and their communities.

Social scientists have often debated on advantages and disadvantages of joint family and also nuclear family. The joint family system was helpful in absorbing several disturbing issues and was also support to the weaker individual in the family.


The growing number of divorce, increasing stress leading to domestic violence, behaviour of children against social norms, extra-marital and pre-marital sexual relations leading to sexual crime; indulging in corrupt practice to meet financial needs of family, rising cost of education are some of the issues which confront the society today.
It is difficult to find exact cause of problems the families are facing today. However, it is definitely an advantage to bring families together periodically, at least in the form of Family Day celebrations.
