With just six police stations, railway travellers expects crime control in Nagpur District of GRP to improve

Maharashtra Government has approved division of jurisdiction of Nagpur District of Government Railway Police (GRP) by creating a new unit at Aurangabad. This would ensure more effective response and better supervision of expanding railway network in the State. Nagpur GRP would be limited to just six railway police stations while Aurangabad GRP would control 10 police stations in the state.

A senior police officer informed that existing Nagpur District had three sub-divisions including Nagpur, Manmad and Jalna. The Government approved creation of new Akola Sub-Division that will including Akola, Wardha and Badnera police units. Of these four sub-divisions, Nagpur and Akola Sub-divisions would be the part of Nagpur District of GRP while GRP Aurangabad will include Manmad and Jalna sub-divisions of the State.

Powers of Nagpur SP would be limited to only six police stations including Nagpur, Gondia, Itwari, Akola, Wardha and Badnera while Aurangabad SP would have more police stations which includes Shegaon, Bhusaval, Chalisgaon, Manmad, Nandurbar, Nasik Road, Igatpuri, Aurangabad, Nanded and Parali Vaijanath.

It may be mentioned that it was becoming difficult for Nagpur based Superintendent of Police, GRP, to control crime in such a vast district. Crime rate was increasing in this railway district steadily since a year while detection rate was falling continuously due to poor performance.

Sources informed that theft cases are on rise in the district as staff of GRP Nagpur utterly failed to control the crime. After creation of new district, the GRP officials would have just six police stations and limited trains to control crime and arranging patrolling in the running trains.
