Museums are repositories of historic, artistic and cultural resources which provide knowledge to students, researchers and entertainment to general public thereby help in developing a better society. Museums play a very important role in developing tourism industry and with that it helps in building up economy of the country.

Apart from to exhibit and store the collections, the most important role of museums is to preserve and conserve their artefacts or objects of artistic, historic, cultural values. For that, every museum must have its own conservation laboratory with a good conservation staff. But, the majority of museums in India neither have laboratory nor conservator. There use to be a small unit in Central Museum, Nagpur that was abandoned. In the whole, there is only one national conservation laboratory namely National Research Laboratory for Conservation of Cultural Property ( NRLC ) under the Ministry of Culture at Lucknow that is not sufficient even to conserve one fourth of our collections.

Considering such a dire need of the conservation and preservation of our museum collections, a conservation unit, registered under District Industry Centre, Directorate of Industries , Government of Maharashtra, namely Heritage Conservation Services has been set up first one of its kind in the country. It is functioning since the year 2013 in the city of Nagpur. Museums, Archives, Libraries other institutions and individuals having artefacts and antiquities may visit to www. heritageconservationservice.com.
