While the State Government is making all out efforts to create awareness on the newly launched E-way system, it has also started conducting surprise checking of vehicles carrying goods. Recently, the State Tax Department conducted such checking at two State entry points with an objective to see whether the transporters are complying the norms laid down under Goods and Services Tax (GST). The State Tax Department through it special squad conducted surprise checking of 392 transporters at Kelwad and Manegaon while they were entering the State. Two teams of officers of the department visited the pre-decided locations and stopped transportors to verify the required documents.

“For inter-state movement of goods worth more than Rs 50,000, E-way bill is compulsory under the Goods and Service Tax (GST). And thus the transporters should possess valid E-way bill with them. In the surprise checking, we ask the trnsportors to produce the E-way bill and if they fail to produce it we take action against them as per the law,” said P K Agrawal, Joint Commissioner, State Tax, Nagpur. He said that the surprise checks will be conducted at regular interval of time as per the directions of the State and Central GST departments.

The department has formed the squads to check E-way bills. These squads are conducting checks on roads, near, toll booths especially near State entry points to assess the bills.
The State Government has already released the guidelines related to E-way.The E-way bill is a permit for the transportation of goods exceeding Rs 50,000. It provides details of the items being transported from source to destination. E-way bill can be generated using the official portal of Goods and Services Tax by registered persons or transporters moving the goods. Since the Government rolled out the new system under the GST regime, new rules are expected to bring in transparency and make the process easier besides providing relaxation to the traders, transportors and others.
