Staff Reporter,

Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MahaMetro) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Indian Railways to extend the Nagpur Metro route to suburban areas like Katol, Wardha, Ramtek and Bhandara. Dr Brijesh Dixit, Managing Director of MahaMetro informed mediapersons that MahaMetro is providing train sets that can run on the railways’ broad-gauge network at a maximum speed of 100 km per hour. He said, “Initially, the project will be implemented in Nagpur and then in other cities as well. This pilot project will solve the problems of those passengers who travel a long distance on regular basis for their work.”

Indian Railway is operating passenger trains between Nagpur to Wardha, Saoner, Ramtek, Kalmeshwar, Bhandara and other nearby places. The Metro Rail has studied these operations and it was found that these trains were not catering to the actual requirements of the local passengers. The trains are consuming more time to reach destination. The speed of the train is around 40-50 kms per hour. The speed from Nagpur to Ramtek passenger train is 27 kms per hour while Bhandara train is 50 kms per hour and Wardha train is 44 kms per hour. While on other hand, Metro can run on a speed of 120 kms which will reduce the travelling time and also save lot of money, informed Dr Dixit.

Dr Dixit also informed that MahaMetro has made the decision to connect Dattawadi with Hingna route through MIDC bypass in the third phase. MahaMetro conducted a joyride for mediapersons on Friday to express the progress of the project. A large number of media representatives experienced the ride between Khapri, New Airport and South Airport metro stations. During the media interaction, Dr Dixit also shared the work and the future plan of MahaMetro.

MahaMetro commences joy rides for citizens

Nagpurians can now experience their own Metro in the form of joy rides as MahaMetro has commenced the group free joy rides for citizens. MahaMetro conducted a joy ride for media representatives on Friday in which a large number of reporters and editors participated. “The idea behind organising joy rides was to inculcate Metro Rail culture among Nagpurians. They should learn about dos and donts while riding the Metro. We want this to happen before commercial operation begins on Sitabuldi-Mihan stretch in March 2019,” said Dr Dixit to media persons.

Persons desirous of enjoying a ride should contact the agency’s office in Anand Nagar, Civil Lines or call at the landline number 0712-2554217. MahaMetro has however, made it clear that priority would be given to underprivileged groups. When asked Dr Dixit about the commercial operations, he said, “The passenger footfall between Khapri to South Airport station is very less, therefore the full commercial operation between these three stations will take time.”
