West Central Railway (WCR) has started a new pit-line at Habibganj Railway Station and this will help in maintenance of long distance trains.Shobhan Chaudhury, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), said, “It is the third pit-line of Habibganj station and it would be a big boost to rail connectivity in the city. The pit-line will enable running of more long-distance trains especially the premier one.”He added that construction of pit-line worth Rs 10 crore has been started this month and it would be completed by end of year 2018. Pit-line is basically a facility for carrying out routine maintenance of stationary trains which includes washing, inspection of railway engines and to check other mechanical parts of trains.

At present, Habibganj station has two pit-lines out of which one is very old. The first pit line has capacity of washing and having stationary capacity of maximum 18 coaches. LHB coaches proposed to be linked in Bhopal Express and other few premier trains could not be maintained at these two pit lines. Railway has already announced to replace the conventional coaches of several premier trains with modern LHB coaches. These coaches are also being prepared at several coach factories and probably they would be delivered to railway for further installation by end of June 2018. At present, railway is maintaining only 4 trains, including Bhopal Express, at these two pit-lines of Habibganj station. The third line is being constructed on Centre for Advance Maintenance (CAM) method which eases the washing of LHB coaches.

Railway has also started World Class Project at Habibganj Railway Station. After developing the station as world class, several new trains will be started from the station. There is also planning to shift few old passenger trains from Habibganj to Bairagarh station. Third pit-line project was approved by Government in Railway Budget 2016 with cost of Rs 10 crore. According to railway officials, the new pit-line is being constructed keeping in view the design of LHB coaches. In this pit-line, a six feet gap will be there in underground area to check the coaches and it will also felicitate the trolleys for maintaining the wheels and safety measures. There will be LED lights and proper drainage system with two path-ways in underground. Workers will be able to walk underground area easily. The path way of upper line area will be wider than the old pit line as it facilitates the movement of machines. There will be highly pressurised air and water supply lines to clean the trains.
