HEALTH Department of Jabalpur Municipal Corporation (JMC) in a joint drive with Madhya Pradesh Pollution Control Board (MPPCB) on Friday seized sub-standard plastic carry bags from shops in Adhartal vegetable market, Gohalpur market and adjoining areas. They seized huge amount of inferior plastic carry bags and prepared challan against several erring shopkeepers. Senior officials of Health Department informed that they conducted the drive in Gorakhpur, Adhartal and adjoining areas, especially in vegetable markets. Health Department officials seized 50 kilograms of sub-standard plastic bags from shopkeepers and prepared challan of five erring vendors. They inspected dozens of shops in aforementioned areas.

It may be noted that JMC has imposed ban on use, sale and transportation of sub-standard polythene carry bags in the city. But, despite prohibition, shopkeepers fearlessly sell plastic bags. JMC administration has repeatedly asked shopkeepers to stop sale and storage of polythene carry bags. Senior officials said JMC will now take legal action and also cancel licence of shopkeepers if they are found selling sub-standard carry bags during further drives. The State Government has time and again directed civic bodies to act tough against people, businessmen who manufacture, store, sell or use sub-standard polythene carry bags.

The UAD Department has asked local bodies to check use of sub-standard polythene carry bags. Following instructions, the Health Department is carrying out drives and taking strict action against manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers who use polythene bags below set standard.
Amongst officials who conducted drive were Sanjay Sharma of Pollution Control Board, Health Officer, G S Chandel, Assistant Health Officer, R P Gupta, Anil Bari, Atul Raikwar, Sohan Rawat and others.
