To cater to the need of expanding boundaries of Orange City, Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has decentralised its functioning in 10 different zones. The civic body has also delegated power of different services at zonal level to empower them. Laxmi Nagar Zone is a high profile zone of the Orange City as this is part of South West Assembly segment represented by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. This zone is getting ample funds for the development from Maharashtra Government. Recently, State Government has cleared the development plan of Rs 100 crore for the beautification of historic Deekshabhoomi.


The zone is providing birth certificates, death certificates, slum certificates, marriage certificates, and also taking care of water supply, property tax, NoC for sewer line, road cutting NoC, permission for erecting pandals and others. Now, the zones are empowered to deal with grievances of the citizens, they do not have to go to Head Office of NMC to solve their problems. The civic body has empowered the zone offices by making a Zone Chairperson, who is elected from corporators and Assistant Commissioner, who is looking after administration.


Prakash Bhoyar is Zone Chairman of Laxmi Nagar zone while Suvarna Dakhne is Assistant Commissioner of this zone. Mayor Nanda Jichkar, Ruling Party leader Sandip Joshi, Rajya Sabha Member Dr. Vikas Mahatme, MLA Sameer Meghe, MLC Anil Sole, former Ministers Datta Meghe, Rajendra Mulak, Vinod Gudadhe Patil, and former MLA Sagar Meghe are residents of this zone.

16 corporators in Laxmi Nagar zone
Laxmi Nagar Zone office is offering its services to majority of residents of South West Nagpur. The area coming under this zones are- VNIT, Bajaj Nagar, Congress Nagar, Ajni, Chhattrapati Nagar, Samarth Nagar, Hindustan Colony, Ujjalwal Nagar, Jaitala, Nelco Society, Cosmos Town, Atre Layout, Savitri Vihar, Airport Colony, Kannamwar Nagar, Shivangaon, Hingna Octroi post, Mate Square and others. The population of the zone is around 4 lakh. The zone has total 15 elected corporators and one nominated corporator. Bharatiya Janata Party has total 12 corporators and Congress has three corporators in this zone. The civic body is generating property tax worth Rs 46 crore from 80,000 property owners.

Maximum green cover
This zone has maximum green cover due to National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI), and Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT). The zone has some beautiful places and buildings including- Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport, historic Deekshabhoomi, Jerryl Lawns, Vivekanand Smarak, Bal Jagat, FCI Godown, Central Jail, Ajni Railway Station and Orange City Street. The zone has several gardens and play grounds namely- Rajiv Gandhi Garden, Joggers Park, Sneh Nagar, Sawarkar Nagar, Deekshabhoomi Garden, Chhattrapati nagar Garden, Sahakar Nagar Garden, Tapovan Colony, Surendra Nagar Garden, Vivekanand Nagar Garden, Telecom Nagar Garden, Atre layout Garden, Jaiprakash Nagar Garden, Rajeev Nagar Garden, Kheta Layout, Trikoni Park, Ramkrishna Nagar, Ujwal Nagar, Somalwada and others.

No Market, No Multiplex
Laxmi Nagar zone area does not have any proper multiplex or commercial complex. They have to visit Sitabuldi for the entertainment. The zone area does not have proper authorized vegetable market. The citizens are dependent on Gopal Nagar, Khamla, Dev Nagar, Vij Mata Market on Orange City Street, Jaitala and Sonegaon Market. Though very popular and old, these markets are illegal according to NMC’s record. The Laxmi Nagar zone has three crematoria- at Sahakar Nagar, Jaitala and Shivangaon. Sahakar Nagar ghat is developed while other two are in state of negligence. NMC is constructing a new zone office of Laxmi Nagar zone. Former corporator Gopal Bohare has conceptualised the new building of the zone. Now, the building is near completion and it will be inaugurated in next 2 months. The zone is also developing International level football ground and joggers park in Sneh Nagar. A garden is also sanctioned at Pande Layout. Many plans of development are in the pipeline.

 


 

Historic Sonegaon Lake, Pohra River


Zone Office is also entrusted with water supply, street lights, health and schools. Prakash Bhoyar, Zone Chairperson said, NMC is providing 24 x 7 water in Laxmi Nagar, Abhyankar Nagar, and Bajaj Nagar localities. Very soon, the uninterrupted water supply will be available in Trimurti Nagar, Gayatri Nagar, and Jaitala. Presently, the Laxmi Nagar zone has deployed 6 tankers making 30 trips daily to provide water in Shivangaon and Jaitala areas.


The zone has historic Sonegaon Lake and Pohra river. This year, the Sonegaon Lake has sufficient water even during April. Last year, the NMC has desilted the lake to increase storage capacity of the lake. The cleaning of Pohra River will start from May 7, he added.
NMC has 660 health workers including aiwajdars for the zone. The zone office has cleaned 22 nullahs of the zone.
