6 militants killed as Army foils infiltration bid along LoC

SRINAGAR,

THE Army on Sunday foiled an infiltration bid along the Line of Control (LoC) in Keran sector of Jammu and Kashmir, killing six militants.
Troops noticed suspicious movement along the LoC in Keran sector in Kupwara district of north Kashmir and challenged the infiltrators, an Army official said here. He said six militants were killed in the ensuing gunfight.


Search operations were continuing the area, the official said.
Troops guarding the Line of Control (LoC) in Keran sector noticed a group of militants sneaking into this side in the wee hours under the cover of darkness, Col Rajesh Kalia told UNI.
However, when challenged and asked to surrender, the militants opened indiscriminate firing with automatic weapons, he said, adding that troops also retaliated ensuing in an encounter in the forest area near LoC. Col Kalia said in the initial gunbattle three militants were killed. Later, one more militant, who was trying to flee, was gunned down at a distance in the woods. Army sources said troops later killed two more militant in the area, taking the total number of infiltrators killed so far to six. This was the fourth infiltration attempt by militants during the past few weeks.


About 10 militants were killed after the sneaked into this side in north Kashmir during the past few weeks.
However, a soldier was martyred and another was injured in one of the encounter.


A large number of militants are waiting at launch pads near LoC to infiltrate into this side during summer month. However, troops are already on high alert and have intensified ground and night patrolling to scuttle any attempt by militants to enter this side.
