Virendra Kukreja, Chairman of Standing Committee of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), will present civic budget for the year 2018-19 before the general body in a special meeting slated at Town Hall on June 11 at 11 am. This will be the second consecutive budget of this regime.

According to sources, Kukreja will present the budget with revenue expected to be around Rs 2,500 cr. Sandeep Jadhav, the then Chairman of Standing Committee, had presented a budget of Rs 2,266 cr the previous year. The then Municipal Commissioner had slashed the budget size upto Rs 1,997 cr while presenting revised budget to Standing Committee. However, the budget did not touch the expected figure of revenue and the civic body could generate only Rs 1,700 cr in 2017-18.

The proposed budget of Municipal Commissioner is of Rs 2,048 cr and this will be increase by almost Rs 800 cr by Standing Committee. The Standing Committee is increasing the budget size as it expects NMC to get ‘special fund of Rs 300 cr from the State Government for development of the Second Capital of Maharashtra. The committee is also expecting revenue of Rs 350 cr from reforms in property tax system. This may increase the civic body’s revenue upto Rs 650 cr.

Municipal Commissioner’s budget for 2018-19 focused on road development, water supply, health facilities, sanitation, street-lights, and planning for new projects. He emphasised on improvement in financial planning, good financial discipline, and funds to be used specifically for respective projects only. It will be interesting to see the priority areas of Virendra Kukreja, Chairman of Standing Committee. The discussion on the budget will be held on Wednesday or Thursday.
