DHAMTARI

FINALLY, the Central Government has given its positive nods for much-awaited railway connectivity to Dhamtari. With this, the district will be directly connected to Bastar and other districts. Central Government’s initiative can be a matter of happiness for entire Dhamatari residents in general; particularly the grain merchants and other traders as now they will not be facing any problem in reaching other places to sell their produce. It needs to be mentioned here that during the British regime a narrow rail gauge was passed through Dhamtari, connecting Nagri and Sihawa. Main purpose behind laying this narrow railway line was to facilitate easy transportation of timber from Nagri-Sihawa.

Later, the SECR discontinued plying of trains on this route due to which the local traders were forced to travel through roadways as it was the only means to reach other places.
For the past several years, the SECR had been conducting survey for extending the rail facilities in Dhamtari and for this several announcements were also made. Nevertheless, the project didn’t get approval. Recently, the Central Government gave its approval for extending rail facilities in Dhamtari by upgrading the narrow gauge lines into broad-gauge lines. The total worth of this project is Rs 543 crore. Besides giving approval, the Central Government has also announced to sponsor this project.

Confirming the Central Government’s approval for the much-awaited railway line project, Mahasamund Member of Parliament Chandulal Sahu expected that with this 67.02-km railway line project the Dhamtari district headquarters will get connected with Raipur and other cities. The railway administration has also launched a drive to free the land from encroachers and soon the project will be started.Expressing their happiness upon this development, locals expected that broad-gauge project will prove as boon for the farmers and local traders. Besides, it will also give employment to local labourers.
