Going ahead with its plan to transform the Orange City into ‘smart’ city, Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has taken a big leap in Smart City Mission by providing ‘smart’ bus stops to commuters. Work on these bus stops has begun and the work is likely to be completed by December 2018. Nagpur Smart and Sustainable City Development Corporation Limited (NSSCDCL) will provide an updated information to commuters waiting at the ‘smart’ bus stops regarding present status of the bus, vacant seats and routes. Larsen and Tubro (L&T) company is providing all technical and financial assistance to make city bus service smart and better.

Presently, city bus stops are in pathetic condition as buses never stop over there due to illegal parking by auto-rickshaws. At many places, the bus stops are in bad shape due to lack of adequate shed, absence of proper seating arrangement for passengers. At places, vendors are illegally occupying the space at bus stops to sell their materials. Women passengers also are facing problems at bus stops. Presently, the bus stops do not display information about present location of buses, which irks passengers. Further, at some more places, people dump waste. Right in front of Laxmi Nagar bus stop, NMC has recently installed two big garbage bins from which emanates the stench that repels the commuters.

Dr Ramnath Sonwane, CEO of Smart City Mission told ‘The Hitavada’ that all the buses would have Global Positioning System (GPS) based vehicle tracking system and location of buses would be displayed at ‘smart’ bus stops under Passenger Information System. This will help passengers in knowing present location of bus, time of arrival, as well as vacant seats in bus. Buses also will have announcement system to give information to the passengers about next stop. The company has also developed an application for passengers to give them information of buses, their routes, and availability of seats. He hoped that this system would be fruitful for commuters as they would be able to plan their trip according to the information.

Shivajirao Jagtap, Transport Manager, said, “The agency has started working on construction of bus stops. We are increasing number of bus stops near Akashwani Square and Allahabad Bank. The frequencies of buses here are high as two buses pass every three minutes from these stops. This often creates traffic jams for other vehicles. We are adding new bus stops as per the requirement of passengers.” D D Jambhulkar, Executive Engineer said, “The same company is constructing new smart bus stops in the city. The company will have advertisement rights over it on revenue-sharing basis. We will provide better seating arrangements to the passengers at bus stops.” Jitendra Kukde, Chairman of Transport Committee, said, “We will place Water ATMs at new bus stops to provide mineral water to passengers at nominal price.”

Presently, NMC is converting 158 of its old bus stops into new ‘smart’ bus stops and also creating 197 new bus stops. This will increase total number of bus stops to 355. The material of present bus stops will be shifted to newer locations in other parts of the city to provide them bus stop facility.
