Police arrest Mayor, 39 Congress workers

POLICE arrested Bhilai Mayor, Devendra Yadav and 39 others including Congress party workers and agitating residents in Khursipar, Bhilai for obstructing demolition drive undertaken by joint team of Bhilai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the district administration. The police initiated legal action in the matter under preventive sections and produced them in the court from where they were released. Police sources informed that on Friday noon, the demolition squad of BMC accompanied by the district administration officials was clearing encroachments at the canal area located in Khursipar, Bhilai when Bhilai Mayor, Devendra Yadav along with party workers reached the area and along with some residents resorted to thwart the demolition drive.


While questioning the propriety of demolishing illegal structures before the due period, mentioned in the notice, he warned the concerning BMC officials regarding their inappropriate stance towards the underprivileged people residing at the makeshift shelters. While acting in the matter the police team initiated legal action and arrested Bhilai Mayor, Devendra Yadav, Shakti Singh and 39 others including some residents from the area under section 107 and 116 (3) of Criminal Procedure Code and produced them in the court of SDM from where they all were released on bond, the police sources said.


A 3 KM long bypass road is being constructed on the canal located at Khursipar at a cost of 28.85 Crores. Six hundred encroachers have encroached upon the canal partially or fully. 150 houses are such, which have fully encroached the canal.
Moreover, 40 persons have established shops over canal they all will be demolished. Among them 150 persons will be facilitated under PM Awas Yojana while 50 percent encroachers have already vacated illegal residents and registered their names for PM Awas Yojana.
