HOSTS Russia thrashed Egypt 3-1 to record their second win from Group A of the World Cup and put one step into the knockouts, on Tuesday. In a lively second half, Russia found the net thrice which included one own goal from Egypt, to take their tally to six points from two games. The only goal for Egypt was scored by Mohd Salah off a penalty in the 73rd minute. After both teams played out a cautious first 45 minutes, the hosts got lucky when they succeeded in taking the lead off an own goal just two minutes into the second essay. It was a nightmarish start to the second half for Egypt. Russian Roman Zobnin fired a poor shot at goal but it took a huge deflection from Ahmed Fathy’s knee into the bottom right-hand corner as the St Petersburg Stadium erupted in celebration.

Russia doubled the lead through Denis Cheryshev in the 59th minute making it more difficult for Egypt.Mario Figueira Fernandes ran to the right and crossed the ball back into the middle, where an unmarked Denis Cheryshev slotted the ball home, to score his third goal from two games. It was all but over for Mohd Salah and his Egypt side just over an hour mark when Russian striker Artem Dzyuba brilliantly took the ball from Ilya Kutepov down inside the area and despatched it across the line giving Egypt goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shenawy no chance.Egypt earned a penalty through VAR when Salah was brought down inside the area. The striker thrashed the ball into the roof of the net to score his first ever goal in World Cup.But that was not enough to bail out his side which became the first side to exit from the tournament.
