Seven arrested for smuggling Pangolin

SEVEN persons were caught while smuggling Pangolin. The action was taken jointly by a team of Cyber Cell, Doura and Rajpur police late Thursday night. According to police, the accused have been identified as Joseph Lakra (27), Kamleshwar Lakra (42), Umesh Thakur (32), Parmeshwar (20), Ramesh Kumar (23), Ramlal (50), Ramavtar (45). All have been charged under sections 39, 44, 48(a), 50, 51 and 52 of The Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. Besides Pangolin, three skins of this rare creature were also recovered from the accused. The recovered Pangolin was handed over to S N Netam, Forest Superintendent of Semarsot Wildlife Sanctuary.


SP T R Koshima had received a tip- off that few persons of Surajpur district in coordination with Umesh Thakur of Liloti village were about to reach Semarsot for giving Pangolin to Ramlal and Ramavtar of Rajpur. Based on information, a joint team of Cyber Cell, Doura and Rajpur police personnel reached Semarsot and found Umesh and other persons engaged in dealing of Pangolin. When asked, they failed to produce any related documents. The market value of seized Pangolin in international market is estimated close to Rs 10 lakh. SI Awanish Kumar Srivas, ASI Rajendra Pandey, Constable Sudhir Singh and other police personnel were part of the action.
