Pranab Mukherjee, former President of India, arrived in the city on Wednesday. He will address the valedictory function of ‘Sangh Shiksha Varg’ of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) at Reshimbagh on Thursday at 6.30 pm. He will share the dais with Dr Mohan Bhagwat, Sarsanghchalak of RSS.

From the airport, the former President of India went straight to Raj Bhavan, where he would stay at night.

As per the official programme, Mukherjee will grace the valedictory function of ‘Sangh Shiksha Varg’ of RSS at Reshimbagh at 6.30 pm on Thursday. At 9.30 pm, he will leave Reshimbagh and reach Raj Bhavan, where he will stay at night. Mukherjee will leave Nagpur by a flight at 1 pm on June 8 (Friday). Mukherjee’s attendance at RSS programme has generated much curiosity nation-wide given his long political career in Congress party. Earlier this year, he had invited RSS’ top ranks at the launch of Pranab Mukherjee Foundation. Dr Mohan Bhagwat also had met Mukherjee during the last days of the latter’s tenure as President of India. Further, Mukherjee had invited Dr Bhagwat for lunch at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

When the news broke that Mukherjee had given his consent to grace valedictory function of ‘Sangh Shiksha Varg--Trutiya Varsha’ (earlier known as Officers’ Training Camp-Third Year) of RSS, it attracted reactions from several quarters. Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram urged Mukherjee to ‘hold mirror to RSS’ in his speech. Some Congress leaders including Ramesh Chennnithala and C K Jaffer Sharief and some of the Opposition leaders urged Mukherjee to reconsider his decision. Another senior Congress leader Sushilkumar Shinde, during his recent visit to Nagpur, said that there was ‘nothing wrong’ in Mukherjee accepting RSS’ invite.

A few days ago, Mukherjee himself drew curtains on the nation-wide debate. “Whatever I have to say, I will say in Nagpur. I have received several letters, requests and phone calls, but I haven’t responded to anyone yet,” he was quoted as saying by Bengali newspaper ‘Anandabazar Patrika’.

Meanwhile, RSS leaders said that Mukherjee was not the first one ‘from outside (RSS) fold’ to grace the event. In the year 1934, Mahatma Gandhi had paid a visit to a RSS camp at Wardha and had discussion with Dr Keshav Baliram Hedgewar, the Founder Sarsanghchalak of RSS. Besides, several eminent personalities ranging from Dalai Lama, the Nobel prize winning Buddhist monk; Dr Zakir Hussain, former President of India; Jayaprakash Narayan, General K M Cariappa had attended various programmes of RSS. Pt Jawaharlal Nehru, the then Prime Minister of India, also had invited RSS Swayamsevaks to participate in Republic Day parade in 1963, after the 1962 war with China, said RSS leaders.

Against the backdrop, all eyes will be on what Mukherjee says at the RSS event on Thursday.
Meanwhile, in a press release issued here, Sarvapanth Samadar Manch welcomed the move of RSS to invite Pranab Mukherjee, former President of India. Dr Umar Khan of Sarvapanth Samadar Manch stated in the release that Mukherjee should be appreciated for accepting the RSS invite. “It has been tradition of RSS to invite people representing diverse thoughts and start a dialogue with them. This is a welcome move,” he added.
