Staff Reporter,

Finally, Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU) has named its moderation hall after noted academician, administrator Dr Arvind Barhate paying tributes to him but without any ceremony. Had University bosses done it ceremoniously, it would have been an honour not for Dr Barhate but also for the university itself. It was Dr Arvind Barhate who played a key role in mending matters post-marksheet scandal of 1999. Unfortunately, the RTMNU does not enjoy good tradition of gratitude towards its benefactors. This unfortunate cultural flaw did not spare even Raobahadur D Laxminaryan, so far the biggest donor. The university has been so negligent about Laxminarayan that it has not refurbished his full size portrait in the Convocation hall even though it badly requires a major facelift. Laxminarayan’s will also had gone missing for sometime while the authorities cared a damn. It may be noted that for a long time the university did not have an authentic list of land donated by D. Laxminarayan.

Another instance of ungratefulness was in the case of Divisional Commissioner Anoop Kumar who was an Acting Vice-Chancellor for a while. It was during that short tenure that Anoop Kumar had convinced iconic industrialist Rahul Bajaj to donate Rs 10 crore to the RTMNU for its new Administrative Building opposite Guru Nanak Bhavan. But when Rahul Bajaj and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis came for bhoomipujan for the building, the university did not even invite Anoop Kumar for the ceremony. The university seemed to have forgotten also that the new building was to come up on the land that Anoop Kumar had got vacated from the clutches of encroachment. The same is the case with Dr Barhate. Today’s generation may not be aware about the contributions made by Dr Arvind Barhate, post-marksheet scam. Dr Arun Satputaley was Vice-Chancellor and Dr Madhukar Rode was Pro-Vice Chancellor. Dr Barhate was given the responsibility as Chairman of Disciplinary Action Committee (DAC).

The cases of unfair means in examination were being looked after by DAC. But Dr Barhate did not restrict its work to merely recommending the punishments to culprits and forwarding those to Board of Examinations. He prepared guidelines for handling such cases that would be helpful for years to come. It was he, who with deep thought created a formula that would make possible declaration of results of revaluation within 30 days when it used to take more than 3 months earlier. He helped in streamlining examination and result systems. Dr Barhate was also known for running Nagpur University Teachers Association (NUTA) successfully and apolitically. There was not a single blot on him throughout his entire career. Many of his contemporaries used to call him as Bhishma Pitamah. The naming process was held without even a ceremony. Even the notification has been written in dry words without emotion.
