Southwest monsoon reaches Bastar

SOUTHWEST Monsoon has finally registered its presence over Chhattisgarh with extensive showers in the Bastar area on Friday. Apart from heavy rainfall at some places in the state, maximum areas of Bilaspur and Raipur districts recorded good showers while moderate to medium rainfall was witnessed at isolated places in Surguja and other districts. 

With 65 per cent cloud cover, Raipur city received 2.2mm rainfall on Friday. But, the highest of 80mm rainfall was recorded at Pandaria, Katghora and Bhopalpatnam. With the arrival of Monsoon and isolated showers across the state, temperature has also come down significantly with highest fall of 7 notches in maximum temperature was at Bilaspur followed with 5 degrees each at Raipur and Pendra. However, Durg and Rajnandgaon topped the chart in maximum temperature recording 37.2 degree Celsius each. 

In a state wide forecast, the Meteorological Center has stated that an Upper Air Cyclone persists over North Madhya Pradesh and its neighbouring areas. Similarly, a trough is formed from North East Rajasthan to Bangladesh passing through South Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand at 1.5 km above mean sea level on Friday.

Under the influence of these two systems and the further advance of Southwest Monsoon, several places in Southern part and moderate to medium rainfall or thundershowers is likely in the Northern areas of Chhattisgarh on June 9. There is a warning of high velocity winds and thundershowers expected at some places, and heavy rainfall may take place at isolated places in the state.  The sky would be generally cloudy with rains or thundershowers expected in the evening hours in Raipur on Saturday.
