Staff Reporter,

High Court to finalise modalities of court-monitored probe into irrigation scam today

Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing Rs 70,000 crore irrigation scam has registered two more offences against the Bajoria Construction Limited, a firm controlled by ex-MLC Sandip Bajoria, a close aide of former deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar. The SIT has charged Bajoria’s firm with submitting forged documents to bag the tender for Raigarh irrigation project and Waghadi project.

The SIT informed the High Court that for Raigarh project in Chandur Railway tehsil of Amravati district, Bajoria’s firm got 25.50 per cent above the tendered price while for Waghadi project in Daryapur tehsil, 17.92 per cent above bid was quoted and accepted.
The Executive Engineer of Yavatmal division has also been indicted for aiding and helping Bajoria to prepare the forged and bogus documents in bagging the contract. First offence has been registered at Chandur Railway police station on March 6 while for Waghadi project the FIR has been filed on July 10 under sections 120B, 197, 198, 199, 200, 420, 468 and 471 of the Indian Penal Code.

Crucial hearing today
The High Court is all set to finalise modalities to put in place a monitoring mechanism to ensure that SIT carries out its work to book culprits and bring them to justice without fear or favour. A division bench consisting of Justice Bhushan Dharmadhikari and Justice Z A Haq during last hearing of PILs filed by Atul Jagtap and Jan Manch mooted a court-monitored probe into entire irrigation scam. The High Court had indicated that it would appoint two retired judges of High Court to whom the SIT would periodically report to ensure that white collared criminals who gobbled up public money should not escape. The modalities in this regard, names of two ex-HC judges and infrastructure required for this empowered panel will be decided during hearing slated on Thursday morning.

The Court had asked the lawyers in the case to make
suggestions for working of this panel. Registration of two fresh FIRs against Bajoria and court-monitored mechanism in the irrigation scam has increased worries of former Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and then WRD Minister Sunil Tatkare whose roles are under scanner in Rs 70,000 crore irrigation scam.
