THE grind for the Indian cricket team of the long tour of England has begun in right earnest with the visitors giving Ireland a sound drubbing in the two opening Twenty20 games. But such an ease of proceedings would stop at that because the Britishers have shown during their recent whitewash of their arch rivals Australia in the one-day series in what great form currently they are. The manner in which England are at present playing their one-day games and the preparation they have got in the form of the recent series against Australia, it would be interesting to watch how the Indian players respond.

For Virat Kohli it would be an important assignment abroad as captain and therefore it would give him the opportunity to showcase his talent on foreign soil. Of course he is armed with genuine set of fast bowlers, who are now rated as world class, and trump cards in spinners. Besides, the batting line-up is formidable. On the back of all these assets the Indian team is currently at the top of international cricket. Virat Kohli so far has led from the front ever since he assumed the team leadership with his superlative batting performances and aggressive leadership qualities. What is remarkable about him is that he has not allowed the responsibility of leading the team to affect his batting prowess. On the contrary he has gone from strength to strength. Hence it would be very interesting to watch the two teams. England of course would have home advantage on their side. While India would be hoping to maintain its run of success.

Since England would be hosting the ICC World Cup next year, it would be a good preparation for the young Indian players and get the feel of the conditions there. The fast bowlers especially would love to exploit the English conditions, while the spinners would hope to weave a web around the prolific English batsmen. Over all it would be an interesting contest between two strong teams in world cricket. Some of the Indian batsmen are fresh from their stint in the Indian Premier League (IPL) season and that should stand them in good stead while facing the English pacemen. But then some of the English players too have benefited from their stint in the IPL this year. For example, Jos Butler has had a great season in the IPL this year and that helped him play a major part England’s whitewash of the Australians.

With the World Soccer Cup tournament reaching its final stages, the Indian and English fans next will have a full-fledged feast of India-England cricket series. Given the intense competitiveness in the two sides, it is unlikely that there would be any dull moment during the itinerary of the Indian team.
