Irked over the misuse of beddings and towels in trains, Railway has given final order for eco-friendly disposable napkins to be distributed in AC coaches of train. The napkins would be costing less to the Railway in comparison to the existing cloth towel.Railway Board has released circular regarding napkin distribution to the divisions. Distribution of the napkin would be started in all trains from July end. The disposable napkins would be distributed to the passengers in train along with the bed roll. It will be made of cotton and it will absorb water quickly. As per information provided by railway officials, weight of each napkin would be more than 50 grams and it would absorb water seven times more than the cotton cloth towel. Besides, passengers will be getting one or two sets of napkin as per travel distance. Passengers travelling for long distance will be getting two napkins while passenger for short distance will get single napkin.

Railways is replacing the cloth towel with disposable napkin in all AC coaches. Earlier, Railway was providing cotton cloth towel to the passengers in AC coaches that was quite costlier and misused by the passengers. Railway officials said much passenger use to clean their shoes and other dirt with the towel. Even a few passengers carry the towel to their home which cost penalty on the coach attendant. The napkin would be easier to use and it would be quite smaller than the towel. Size of the existing towel is 52x40 CM while the disposable napkins will be 40x30 cm in size.

“We have notification from boar for distribution of disposable napkins in AC coaches instead of the cloth towel. Railway has already ordered to store the napkins and soon distribution will get start in AC coaches. The existing towel is being misused by passengers and many of them carry it to their home,” said IA Siddique, PRO Bhopal Division. He further informed that several cases have been reported in which passengers ask for additional pair of towel with the attendant and clashes happen between them for the same. Besides, few passengers also avoid using the towel distributed by railway assuming that it would be dirty or used by other people.

The existing cloth towel cost about Rs 4 (including procurement and washing) while the new disposable napkins will cost less to the railway. He said Railway will order the napkin in bulk and smaller in six so it would cost less. There will be no need of washing the towel frequently and collecting the same after train arrives on destination. Siddique said, after distributing the napkins, coach attendant will be free from collection and other issues. Charges of the napkin will be included in ticket price along with the bed roll.
