In a shocking incident, a 30-year-old leader of the BJP’s youth wing, BJYM, is in a critical condition after he allegedly shot himself outside the residence of his girl friend to prove his love for her, police said on Wednesday. The cops are yet to file any case against the girl’s family despite claims of abetment to suicide by the family members of BJYM leader.Atul Lokhande in his 1500-word suicide note, posted on his Facebook wall on Tuesday evening at around 8.56, wrote “Many people fall in love, but no one can love you like I do. Truth is that I can’t forget you, because you are mine. I will love you forever. Till I die and even after that …I am not a weakling, neither am I a coward. All lovers give their heart, but only I will give my life. Rashmi’s father told me that if you love her, come to my place tomorrow and show that you can die, if you survive, your marriage to Rashmi will be done. If not, there are seven births. You can reborn and marry her.”
More than 40 photographs of himself with the girl, as well as screenshots of his WhatsApp chats with the group were ‘attached’ with the suicide note and claimed that they were in relationship for the last 13 years and had even got married. “The more inter-caste and inter-religious marriages happen, the more powerful India will become,” he said further.

He signed off with a demand that ‘strict action should be taken against G S Mehra (Rashmi’s father) if something happens to me.’Within less than an hour after posting the suicide note, Atul reached the home of Rashmi Mehra, 27, in Shivaji Nagar locality of the city and shot himself in the temple with a country-made pistol. He was taken to nearby hospital in a critical condition where he is kept on ventilator. Reports say that he is brain dead, though the doctors at the hospital declined to comment. Atul’s family members also wished to donate his organs if doctors would declare him brain dead.

Atul was a junior office-bearer in Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the youth wing of the BJP. Rashmi is a probationary officer in State Bank of India. The girl and the boy were in relationship for over 13 years untill recently when she got selected in a bank and she started avoiding him. Police said Atul loved Rashmi, and both of them had gone to school and college together. Atul and his family members had approached Rashmi’s family with marriage proposals on multiple occasions, but the girl’s father, who is a government officer, did not agree. On Thursday, Rashmi Mehra while interacting to mediapersons admitted that she was in relationship with Atul for the past 10 years, but of late realised that she would not be happy with him and I had the right to say no and I had said no. She herself was not interested in marrying Atul. “For the past one year or so, his behaviour was awkward and unsettling. He often threatened suicide, if she wanted, her family would not have come in the way of their marriage. “My father and my family members do not have a narrow mindset,” she said.

Rashmi said that even after her refusal, Atul was ‘pressurising’ her to marry him. “He was trying to blackmail me emotionally,” she added. Rashmi also alleged that about six months back, Atul’s brother had misbehaved with her father. According to Superintendent of Police (SP) (South) Rahul Kumar Lodha the man has attempted suicide and any allegations of a foul play seem baseless as of now. The status also has the contact number of the girl’s father who he addresses and says that people like him, who discriminate among persons on the basis of religion and caste, are responsible for the downfall of the country after her father denied approving their relations.
