Water Resources Minister Dr Narottam Mishra welcomed the decision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to increase the minimum support price (MSP) of 14 kharif crops. Mishra said that this step of Modi government is going to make farmers financially strong. Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, Dr Narottam Mishra said that it is after a long gap of 10 years that such substantial hike has been done in rates of kharif crops. In 2008-09, UPA Government had increased the rates by Rs 155. Modi government has increased paddy’s MSP by Rs 200 per quintal. Now, paddy’s MSP rate has got increased to Rs 1,750 per quintal. Maize’s MSP rate has been increased to Rs 1,700 from Rs 1425. Tuar’s MSP has been increased to Rs 5600 from Rs 5400 per quintal. He told that now farmers financial would become better as they would be getting better prices of their produces. However, he refused to comment on farmer loan waiver issue and criticised Rahul Gandhi for announcing farmers’ loan within ten days if Congress comes to power in Madhya Pradesh. “Political parties like Congress try to create confusion by talking about loan waiver. If one wants to see then it should see towards Punjab where only a small portion of farmers’ loan has been waived against the total outstanding loan,” he said.
