Congress President Rahul Gandhi and NCP chief Sharad Pawar held meetings to finalise the alliance

After debacle in last general elections, leaders of Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) have decided to join hands and forge a grand alliance with like-minded smaller parties in Maharashtra. Congress President Rahul Gandhi and NCP chief Sharad Pawar have discussed the idea of the grand-alliance. So far, three meetings have already been held. MPCC chief Ashok Chavan said that the grand-alliance would be finalised after final meeting between Rahul Gandhi and Sharad Pawar.
It may be mentioned that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had bagged 23 seats and its alliance partner Shiv Sena won 18 seats during 2014 general elections while Congress and NCP faced a rout and were reduced to just two and four seats respectively. Congress and NCP had an acrimonious break-up ahead of the 2014 general elections. Learning lessons from the debacle, the Congress-NCP leaders have decided to put up a joint front during forthcoming general elections.
Interacting with mediapersons at Nagpur Press Club, Chavan informed reporters that Congress and NCP would rope in small parties including factions of Republican Party of India, Samajwadi Party (SP), Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) to win the forthcoming general elections. Whether Sena and BJP remained together is irrelevant for us, Chavan claimed.
Taking pot-shots at Shiv Sena for enjoying power with BJP and cornering the government on Nanar Refinery Project issue at the same time, Chavan wondered about continuation of this uncomfortable alliance.
The former Chief Minister fired a salvo at the BJP-Sena government over its alleged failure to curb farmers suicides. This government is overlooking problems of farmers hence, more than 15,000 farmers have committed suicides in the state so far, he alleged. “They have announced mega schemes including loan waiver for farmers but did not mobile financial resources for implementation of the schemes,” he said. The loan waiver of Rs 34,000 crore was announced but only Rs 14,000 crore were disbursed to farmers. He also raised issue of transferring amount of loan waiver to the farmers directly during recently held by-polls of Gondia and Palghar constituencies. “The government is playing with sentiments of the farmers. Was the government luring the farmers in the name of loan waiver?,” he questioned. He also claimed that crop loan was disbursed to just 18% farmers this year.
Bank officials are molesting wives of farmers and three such incidents have been reported in the State so far, he claimed while lashing out at the government. Law and order situation is deteriorating as innocent people have been killed by mobs in the state. In Nagpur, 63 persons were murdered in 100 days, he said and opined that the government failed on all fronts. Congress party will corner the Government and try to get justice delivered to the people, he added.
MLA D P Sawant, Atul Londhe, Vikas Thakre, Munna Oza, Baban Taywade also were present at the press conference.
