India is one of the biggest pulse producing nations: Shekhawat

UNION Minister of State for Agriculture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said that once India was foodgrain deficit country. After being voted to power, Modi Government paid attention on agriculture and pulse production was taken up on priority. Now, India is one of the biggest pulse producing countries and has become surplus in pulse production. Minister Shekhawat was addressing a press conference at BJP headquarters in the State capital on Thursday. Gajendra Singh Shekhawat praised recent decision of Modi Government to increase minimum support price (MSP) of crops by telling that earlier consumers were kept in focus but Modi Government focused on farmers and basic infrastructure of agriculture.


Claiming that now all sector of agriculture are seeing rise, he told that against the target of giving soil health card to farmers, soil health cards have been given to 10.70 lakh. After innovative steps taken under agriculture sector, demand of urea has increased from 8 per cent to 10 per cent. He told that adverse weather and market are biggest foes of farmers. To provide relief to them in this regard, as many 585 mandis were integrated. Apart from this, Crop Insurance Scheme has been introduced for peasants. Such is the scenario under Modi Government that every ministryis working more than the set target and hence now their achievements have not become a point of discussion in media. He underlined the need to promote pulse production and coarse cereal in the country. Telling that procurement is a challenging task and enough work has been done in this regard.


Now, the Government is working towards robust mechanism in this direction. Moreover, he made a veiled attack on Congress over farmers’ protest in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra by telling that farmers were politically provoked. He was candid enough to accept that every dairy is under stress as its products rates are decided by base value of milk powder. And there is 35 per cent recession in milk powder. Now, such is the scenario that 3 lakh tonnes of milk powder has got stockpiled and his ministry had suggested the Government to distribute it in mid-day meal. He asserted that the Modi Government implemented 99.9 per cent recommendations of Swaminathan Committee. He also praised Madhya Pradesh’s Bhavantar Scheme meant for farmers.
