Barely 25 days after it was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Air Odisha flight connecting Bastar and Raipur, would be grounded following a major technical glitch with the landing gear of nearly two-decade old Beechcraft 1900D. This flight will not be operational between July 9 to 21. It may be recalled that PM Narendra Modi on June 14 inaugurated the first domestic flight service for people of Chhattisgarh between Jagdalpur-Raipur-Vishakhapatanam for providing affordable air services to common people under Udega Desh Ka Aam Nagrik (UDAAN) Project of Central Govt. The state’s maiden regional flight service was flagged-off by the PM Modi from Bhilai, even as some aviation experts had raised serious concerns about the operation and maintenance of the 18-seater twin-engine Beechcraft 1900D, the production of which was discontinued 17 years ago. Earlier also, a day after its first commercial air operations began on June 15, the flight had to be cancelled due to some major reasons.

Later, the flight operations remained suspended for another two days in succession. According to information, under this service, Air Odisha, the private carrier is operating Beechcraft 1900D aircraft, does not have alternate plane to ensure the continuity of service. “Since the changing of landing gear in the solo plane of the private carrier is a major work, the services shall remain suspended. When The Hitavada contacted, Rakesh S Sahay, Director of Swami Vivekananda Airport in Raipur, he confirmed the suspension of the flight services during the aforesaid dates of July month citing the same technical reason.
