INDIA’S largest car maker, Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) has set a noble aim for itself -- train 15 lakh people by 2020 through its nationwide network of driving schools. Given the rate of road accidents, mostly caused by untrained drivers of vehicles, taking nearly 1.5 lakh lives every year, imparting such scientific driving skills has become a necessity and Maruti Suzuki is doing a pioneering work in that direction. Imparting scientifically designed training is the hallmark of the company’s initiative towards safe driving methods. That the company has set up 450 driving schools covering 212 cities throughout the country, speaks about the seriousness it attaches to this mission. In the last five years the company has trained over 5 lakh people in safe driving skills. That the company has also set up Driving and Traffic Research Institutes shows how much importance it attaches to this aspect of road safety. It would be worthwhile if other automobile companies too take interest in this noble cause and contribute to improving the chaotic and often dangerous traffic conditions on the roads.

PACE PROMISE

EVEN before the start of the high-stakes five-Test series, the Indian pace battery has got a big compliment from former England skipper Alastair Cook, who has praised the variety and depth in the visitors’ pace bowling. Cook’s sentiment stems from the recent exploits of the Indian fast bowlers in South Africa at the start of the year. Nobody had expected Indian pacers to outshine the Proteans but it was on the sheer class and quick adjustments according to conditions that helped India lord over South Africa. Almost the same crop will be at service for India in England even though Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah remain iffy. Yet, the pace aces India have in their arsenal promise a new hope in the damp and fickle English conditions. The likes of Ishant Sharma, Mohammad Shami and Umesh Yadav can stand up to the challenge with the variety of styles they possess. Four years ago, Ishant had hounded England with his bouncers. Shami has an uncanny knack of delivering probing lines and Yadav’s pace can win crucial sessions for India. Variety has added a spice!
