The series of house collapse is not ending in the city as another house caved in on Thursday. In last two days, four kutchha houses collapsed and took lives apart from damaging colossal stock of household goods.

On Thursday, a house situated in Katra Mohalla in Adhartal, caved in. Though no casualty or injury was reported, but it created panic amongst residents of adjoining houses. Earlier, two houses had collapsed on Wednesday. As per the information, damaged portion of a house situated in Katra Mohalla, Adhartal under Abdul Hamid ward collapsed on Thursday. The house belongs to one Sharda Prasad Raikwar. The roof and walls of the house fell on the road. It was fortunate that no one was present at the time of the incident. Property worth Rs 70,000 was damaged in the incident.

Likewise, two houses, one each in Cherital ward and Ram Manohar Lohia ward respectively, also caved in on Wednesday. It may be noted that such incidents occur with start of monsoon every year. Despite this, the Jabalpur Municipal Corporation (JMC) takes no step against old, damaged houses. Every year, a number of old, kutchha houses collapse. People get injured, even lose their lives in such incidents. But the Municipal Corporation takes no pains to raze dangerous houses or get them repaired before rains.
People residing near such damaged, dangerous houses make complaints to the civic body and urge concerned authorities to remove the houses as they might prove fatal to them anytime. But, senior officials of the JMC pay no heed to the complaints and ultimately, the damaged houses collapse during monsoon.

In Jabalpur, there are hundreds of houses and even multi-storied buildings, which got constructed decades ago become dangerous for residential purpose. But, the JMC takes no interest in getting the damaged houses repaired or evacuated to ensure safety of people living in and surrounding the dangerous dwellings. The negligence on part of the JMC might prove dear when any damaged multi-story building collapses and proves unfortunate for the denizens.
