Kunchbondhiya Mohalla tragedy: Body of 2nd youth fished out

A massive demonstration was staged at Kunchbondhiya Mohalla on Thursday morning after the body of the second youth, who reportedly was swept away in high current from Sheetaalmai Kunchbondhiya Mohalla, was found at Madanmahal link road nullah. The body was fished out by local divers, who were forced to stop the rescue work on Wednesday evening due to poor light. The youth found in the nullah on Thursday morning around 10.30 am has been identified as Golu Vanshkar, resident of Vanshkar Mohalla. After the body was found, there was a panic-like situation followed by inhabitants from Sheetaalmai Kunchbondhiya Mohalla staging demonstration against the administration. The colony people, who staged demonstration, were supported by good number of Congress leaders.


According to information, the toil carried out by rescue team comprising Home Guard, JMC team and police in search of the second missing youth, who was swept away in the tragic incident on Wednesday at Sheetaalmai Kunchbondhiya Mohalla, has been finally fished out. The body of Golu found on Thursday morning takes the death toll in yesterday’s water-logging incident to 2. About the tragedy occurred, it may be recalled here that it was afternoon panic at Sheetalamai nullah falling under Ghamapur region of Jabalpur East Assembly segment on Wednesday. The incessant spell of rain that hit the city accounted for massive water logging as majority of colonies were badly inundated. The mishap occurred at Sheetalamai nullah when three youth amidst high zeal on motorbike attempting to cross over the flooded nullah were swept away in the high current. About the mishap occurred, it was informed that, on Wednesday, it rained heavily and accounted for large scale water logging across the city.


Of the various colonies, Sheetalamai nullah of Ghamapur area was worst-affected as the incomplete nullah in the area over-flooded, proving a death trap for three youth from the region, who riding a motor bike attempted to cross over the flooded nullah. Unaware of the incomplete construction of the nullah, they were swept away in the high current, causing panic among people who witnessed the incident. Soon after the incident took place, amidst panic, JMC was informed.


A rescue team of JMC comprising fire brigade and others reached the spot to take stock of the situation. Out of three youth swept away in the nullah, one was rescued by local people with the assistance of the fire brigade team. Of the two suspected to have been swept away in the high current, one named as Akash Vanshkar was fished out from Naudra bridge nullah, while another named as Golu was beyond the reach of rescue team and was feared drowned in the flood.


After the body was found, there was a gathering of large number of people from Sheetaalmai Kunchbondhiya Mohalla, who staged demonstration against the administration on the issue of death trap drains left over by the corporation. Cops who carried out investigation made panchnama and registered case accordingly, but the body was brought to Sheetaalmai Kunchbondhiya Mohalla as people staged massive dharna staging road blockade demanding compensation to the family members of the deceased youth who met with watery grave. On being informed about the protest staged, SDM reached the spot, held talks with peeved inhabitants and assured of adequate compensation. The assurance given made the people to disperse from the spot, paving way for restoration of traffic. The body was sent for autopsy to Medical College and Hospital.
