Two sustain serious burns after explosion in BSP

A BSP employee and also a contract worker sustained serious burns as molten metal spilled over following explosion within the ladle in FFCR of Blast Furnace-I in Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) during early hours on Friday. The condition of the victim contract worker was stated to be critical at the hospital. The office bearers from the trade unions including CITU and INTUC inspected the spot and demanded probe into the mishap.


According to information, during intervening nights of Thursday and Friday, the mishap occurred, causing serious burns to Emanuel Minj, Senior Technician (Stove Tender), Blast Furnace-I, BSP and the contract worker Ravi Kumar Jangade. The mishap occurred at Furnace Foreman Control Room (FFCR), BSP at about 3:30 am on Friday. In the mishap, all of a sudden molten metal spilled over following explosion within the ladle causing Emanuel Minj, the BSP employee and Ravi Kumar Jangade, the contract worker serious burn injuries.


After mishap the victim employee and the contract worker were immediately shifted to JLN Hospital, Bhilai wherein they are undergoing treatment. S P Dey, president, Hindustan Steel Employees Union (CITU) informed that on information of the mishap the trade union’s safety committee, Blast Furnace Departmental Committee and T & D (Blast Station) Committee jointly inspected the spot and discussed the mishap with the workers deployed at the shop. As part of procedure, while preparing a ladle ferroalloy put into it in adequate quantity at Ladle Repairing Shop (LRS) in BSP. He informed that however, the facts of the mishap including the cause would be ascertained after thorough investigation in the matter but during inspection it appeared that the molten metal suddenly splashed owing to wet ferroalloy as the sack consisting it were seen stored in open even in the ongoing rainy season at LRS in BSP.


He also informed that in the course of inspection the joint committee also learnt about the similar mishap that was occurred about two days ago in Blast Furnace I, BSP. The mishap did not come to fore as no one was injured in it. The trade union’s committee was comprised of S P Dey, Ali Akbar, Kunj Bihari, J K Verma, V S Sahu, Ravishankar Sahu, Anil, Shekhar, Lakhan and R K Lader.


V B Singh, Deputy General Secretary, Steel Employees Union (INTUC) informed that after the mishap the trade union office bearers led by General Secretary, S K Baghel inspected the spot and recorded details of the mishap. He informed that while alleging negligence on the part of authorities concerned the trade union demanded thorough probe in the matter.
