Many years ago, we made a tryst with destiny and now the time has come when we shall redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially. These were the felicitous words spoken by our country’s first Prime Minister Pt Jawaharlal Nehru on the eve of India’s Independence.

Certainly, now is the time that we need to redeem the pledge taken by our leaders, write our destiny anew and help our motherland attain the pinnacle of glory. In due reverence of the Independence Day that went by, I call upon each one of you to embrace the glorious past of India, revel in it and pay homage to the architects of our great nation.

Growth is never merely by chance. It is the result of a number of forces working together. Merely wishing for a change, procrastinating, depending on others won’t do. It is us and us only who have to assimilate the spirit of change within ourselves, to cherish and follow the noble ideals which inspired our national struggle for freedom. Ultimately, the power of choice between good and evil is what freedom is really all about. The freedom, which has been bestowed upon us after a long and arduous struggle in which thousands of people laid down their lives, should not be taken for granted.

The holy soil of India -- Bharat -- has been purified by the blood of hundreds of martyrs. Great people have taken birth on this land and great people have sacrificed their lives to protect its majesty, integrity, glory and sovereignty. If you want to know what the value of freedom is - ask a child who goes to school, ask a woman who goes to work with her head held high, ask a farmer who sprays the earth in green, ask a soldier who goes to war without caring for his life, ask a commoner when he sees the National Flag flying high in all its splendour, and you will get the answer.

Though the tides of time may seem to be turbulent and the glory of our nation may seem to be eclipsed by evils like corruption, intolerance, violence and extremism, we must pledge to commemorate this red- letter day by waging an inner crusade against the evils present within us. We have to empowered and spiritually emancipated to retain and consolidator hard-earned sovereignty.

Let each one of us should be overwhelmed in the spirit and fervour of patriotism and remember that each individual can make a difference.
The hopes are pinned high on the youth, on whose shoulders rests the responsibility of taking this country forward. The obstacles may be aplenty but it’s the zenith of success where we have to reach.

A heartfelt salute to the freedom fighter within each of us who has constantly strived to keep the flame of patriotism burning. But this Independence is incomplete until we achieve freedom from intolerance, corruption, violence, extremism and from all the vices which are a threat to the integrity of India.

Let us resolve to transform our motherland into a heaven of freedom, idealism, progress and peace.
As Rabindranath Tagore rightly said, “Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high.”
JAI HIND.
