Lack of coordination between government departments proved a setback in implementation of traffic engineering in the district. Despite knowing the fact of mismanaged construction of roads, squares and other infrastructures, Jabalpur Municipal Corporation, District Administration and Police Department are yet to come-up with concrete measures for making collaborative planning for actual improvement in traffic operation in the city.

Ironically, several senior administrative and police officers took charge in the district and all of them expressed their commitment for solving traffic problem on top priority but most of them have been transferred and the problem still stands. Even after facing regular traffic jams at crowded market places the authorities have failed in implementing one-way traffic system in the city.

SHO of Traffic police station, Hemant Barhaiya, while talking to ‘The Hitavada’, informed that several traffic improvement programmes are being organised in regular intervals for imparting road safety education, avoiding drunken driving, use of helmet, rash driving, violation of traffic norms and mismanaged parking to avoid road accidents and fluent traffic operation.

Inspector, Barhaiya informed that one-way traffic system was earlier started from Tularam – Andherdeo, Tularam – Galgala, St. Norbert School – Nav Bharat Press and others roads but could not be continued longer due to protest by different organisations. He said that entry of cars could not be averted in market places due to existence of residential cum commercial areas in market places. Loading vehicles were also prohibited during peaking working hours in market places but it was also discontinued after agitation of traders.

Traffic Inspector, Hemant Barhaiya said that along with maintaining better coordination between different departments there is a need to bring traffic sense amongst residents for desired improvement in traffic operation.
Disappointingly, despite making continuous efforts, ground reality of traffic improvement campaign is poles apart due to absence of coordination between concerned departments and political interference.

Traffic police has made several experiments for bringing traffic sense and enforcement of traffic norms but absence of traffic engineering made the work more complicated.
On the other hand, Jabalpur Municipal Corporation spent crores of rupees in development of beautification of roads and squares but failed in implementing traffic engineering. Most of the squares and roads have been constructed without any consultation with traffic department or consultancy with engineering experts.

Some of the busy market places like Karamchand Chowk, Ganjipura, Bada Fuhara, Andherdeo, Miloniganj etc are regularly facing long traffic jam during peak working hours due to mismanagement traffic arrangements. Besides this, entry of commercial vehicles and four wheelers in crowded market areas doubled the trouble for visitors.
