Family members of an industrial worker Gopal Singh, an electrician who died recently in an accident in the premises of Monnet Ispat and Power Ltd, Mandir Hasoud, have warned of self immolation. The man was working under a contractor Tapeshwar Yadav.

At the press conference at Raipur Press Club on Friday, family members of the deceased have alleged that electrocution was the cause of death, but it is being projected as a case of heart attack in order to cover up the negligence in safety measures.

The electrician died on August 27 and he was employed under a contractor Tapeshwar Yadav. At about 5.45 am on that day he left home for duty and two hours later a Monnet employee informed over mobile phone that he was electrocuted and taken to Monnet hospital, said widow Kiran Devi accompanied by her daughter Pinky Singh and three sons. The surviving 6-member family resides at Kurud village, Mandir Hasoud, Raipur district The widow and daughter further said that on reaching the Monnet hospital, the doctors told that condition of the victim was serious so he was rushed to Dr BR Ambedkar Memorial Hospital, Raipur. He was declared dead in the hospital and the body was then taken for postmortem by a manager from Monnet, time office in-charge and the contractor with the support of a few employees. But, none of the family members were allowed to see even the face of the deceased.

After post mortem, the body was brought home in the evening in a suspicious way, not by the main road even on insistence of brother. The body was brought through lanes past villages in a clandestine manner. A large number Monnet staffs was present in the house and there too none of the family members were allowed to see the body. They were just shown a glimpse of the body and then it was taken for cremation and after that Monnet management told that low blood pressure or heart attack was the cause of death, they said.

Not only the eye-witnesses are talking about electrocution, but a video in circulation also show Monnet staff members a discussing among themselves and apprehending electrocution, the duo said.

Meanwhile police have registered a case and the postmortem report is awaited. The family members demanded that if the cause of death is not ascertained satisfactorily and injustice is done the entire family will take the extreme step of self immolation, the duo said.

When contacted Station House Officer (SHO), Mandir Hasoud told this newspaper that Monnet management had informed the police about the matter over phone. Postmortem report is awaited so nothing can be said about the cause of Gopal Singh’s death. Statements of the eye-witnesses, Monnet management, the contractor and the family members are to be recorded, the SHO added.
