MASSIVE TASK

CLEANING the Ganga is like the massive effort of sage Bhagirath to bring the pious river to the earth. It is such a massive work and Union Minister Mr. Nitin Gadkari has taken upon himself that task that had begun when late Mr. Rajiv Gandhi was the Prime Minister. Now Mr. Gadkari assures that the objective would be achieved within about next one and half years, that is by the year 2020.

Undertaken at a massive cost of Rs. 22,238 crore, the enormity of the task can be gauged from the fact that as many as 221 projects are underway under the Namami Gange Mission across thousands of kilometers covering several states. That shows the importance the Central  Government attaches to the cleaning of Ganga.

It is not just the religious sentiment that is attached to this project, it is as much an effort to save the ecology that permeates through the flow of the river. Thanks to the Himalayas, which keep on feeding water into it  on a perennial basis that the Ganga has survived natural and man-made ravages. The effort, therefore, to restore its pristine glory is worthwhile and worth the effort.

PAYING PENALTY

OLD frailties continue to haunt India in the hockey arena, costing them dear in crucial moments. Jakarta Asian Games semi-final saw the same story unfolding when India, on a high of an unparalleled scoring spree, choked in the dying moments against Malaysia and squandered a chance to win gold and a ticket to 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Riding a wave of a record 76 goals in the league stage, India were not supposed to come such cropper against an opponent not too strong. After the loss to Australia on penalties in Champions Trophy final, one thought India had learned their lesson. Nothing seems to have changed despite coach Harendra Singh’s passionate efforts to bring about a turnaround. As the coach has stated, India’s road to Olympics has got really tricky now. Asiad was the easiest chance to book their Tokyo ticket. The semis show has exposed India’s chinks and it will take a mighty mental makeover to overcome the heartbreak. The team has to do a lot of introspection  before taking a fresh guard for their coveted place in Olympics.
