Double-honour for Gadchiroli in MGNREGS implementation

Gadchiroli is among 18 districts of the country to be awarded for implementation of MGNREGS

Most people in the country might be knowing Gadchiroli as a Maoist-affected district. However, over the years, it is working hard to earn a positive identity. In recognition of its efforts, Central Government has chosen Gadchiroli to be among 18 districts to be awarded for implementation of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) in 2017-18.

Interestingly, Gadchiroli is the only district from Maharashtra among these 18 districts chosen from across the country. The districts selected for award for the best implementation of MGNREGS, include two districts each from Telangana, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Odisha, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh, and one each from Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, and Meghalaya. The awards will be presented in a ceremony to be held in Delhi on September 11.

Maharashtra has won total four awards, of which two have gone to Gadchiroli district. Gadchiroli has won an award for the effective implementation of MGNREGS in the district, and Nagari Gram Panchayat in the district has won another award for excellent administration of the scheme. Other two awards for Maharashtra include one for the State, and another for Nutan Prakash Baswant, a Grameen Dak Sevak working in Thane district.

In Maharashtra, MGNREGS was implemented to complete water conservation works as part of Jalyukta Shivar Abhiyan. In 2017-18, total 70,514 works of natural resource management were done at the expenditure of Rs 1,451.74 crore.

As far as Gadchiroli district is concerned, it has 12 tehsils. In 2017-18, Kurkheda tehsil in Gadchiroli posted the best performance among all tehsils in the district. It completed 1,000 works at the cost of Rs 18.8782 crore, thereby creating 4,92,203 mandays of employment. In number of mandays created, Chamorshi topped the list with 6,00,827 mandays of employment. Overall, 12 tehsils of Gadchiroli district completed 6,152 works at the cost of Rs 127.8292 crore, thereby creating 39,90,871 mandays of employment.
A S R Nayak, who is presently Commissioner (MGNREGS), was District Collector of Gadchiroli when the district posted its excellent performance in implementation of the scheme. While implementing MGNREGS in Gadchiroli district, several works relating to irrigation wells, farm-ponds, vermi-composting etc were taken up and completed.

Nagari Gram Panchayat in Gadchiroli district posted excellent performance under the leadership of Ajay Mashakhetri, Sarpanch. The Gram Panchayat focussed on national resource management. It set an example for others to follow by way of proper administration in issuance of job cards, maintenance of register, citizen’s charter, planning of works to be done, details of works etc. It created 71,24 mandays of work at the expenditure of Rs 11.35 lakh.
