With the ongoing evolution of extension technology in farming, the IT industry is paving a new way of farmers’ education through application on mobile platform. After web-based tools, recent advance is mobile-based applications becoming solution oriented support system for farmers. The mobile applications in the area of farming are being designed to resolve problems being faced by farmers related to climate change, crop cycle, variety of seeds, economics of different crops, including horticulture and cash crops, medicinal plants, etc. to make farming a profitable enterprise and to take farming to next level in next two years. The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), through Agriculture Technology Transfer and Application Research Institute and State agriculture universities have floated an idea to design concepts and derive formula to assist farmers through mobile applications. In this direction, the nation-wide network of Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) has been given opportunity to design and shape mobile applications on their work of specialisation.

In the recently-held Zonal-level Conference of the Krishi Vigyan Kendra being operated across the country as per extension programme of ICAR, few mobile applications were launched covering different sections. The mobile applications related information is available with KVKs and on the website of ICAR as well as in the Department of Agriculture, State Agriculture University, Krishi Vigyan Kendra. Farmers can register by downloading the applications directly from websites or can register it from the KVKs.

Agro-Economist and Dean Faculty of Agriculture Sciences, JNAU, Dr P K Mishra talked about the new concept of transforming farming under ENAAM programme. Simultaneously, ICAR is giving opportunity to the SAUs, scientific research institutions to bring their work on mobile
platform through mobile applications and help farmers to avail it in better way. Jawaharlal Nehru Agriculture University (JNAU), Public Relation Officer, Dr Shekhar Singh Baghel said that, as per wish of Prime Minister, Narendra Modi and Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the JNAU is working under the direction of Vice Chancellor, Professsor P K Bisen to fulfill the mandate of doubling farmers’ income by 2022. In this direction, technology could be helpful.

In present scenario, when mobile applications are playing key role in facilitating service in every sector, the information about different sections of farming is also available on mobile applications.

It may be mentioned that under the banner of Madhya Pradesh Consortium of Farmers Producers Company E-market and transformation of the Krishi Upaj Mandis as E-KUMs is being studied and implemented in State. The e-platform formation would help in overcoming challenges like issues related to sellers and buyers, storage, transportation, pricing, quality standarisation and assurance for the buyers in far distance, security and safety of investment, etc.

In wide spectrum of agriculture sciences, use and importance of IT is increasing tremendously. Use of mobile platform in training farmers about every stream, right from preparation of soil, selection of crops, variety of seeds, use of fertilizer, pathological and pest control measures to post harvest work and even marketing tools for selling crops are available on mobile applications, Dr Baghel opined.
