HUMANITY not only means the human race but also the qualities which make us humane, the ability to have compassion, be kind, creative and not be a “robot or alien”. What distinguishes us from animals? They also eat food, sleep, run, give birth like us. It is but humanity, which separates us from them. But it is being seen that people are slowly turning into human robots having no empathy and feelings for one’s brethren.

Vasudeva Kutumbhakam - the world is but one big family; this philosophy took birth in the holy land of India. But do we really cherish and preserve this ideal? Love and compassion are necessities and not luxuries, without them humanity cannot survive. Presently, the world is witnessing a dangerous phenomenon of humanity slowly ebbing away. Lack of empathy to the elderly people, to those in need, people just being bystanders to accident sites, not helping the victim who is in critical state instead recording it on cameras to circulate it on WhatsApp assuming that others would help him have become everyday sights.

The horrific rape of an 8-year-old girl in Kathua, sexual attack cases, numerous lynching cases, gruesome murders are but big setbacks to humanity. The recent example being the suicide of a teenager being captured on camera by a man living in the opposite building. Aren’t we being a bit insensitive?

Technology has revolutionised the world, changed our outlook towards life but this does not mean that we lose our core elements. How many disasters do we need to unite humanity? Who we are as human beings if we ignore the sufferings of others? In today’s world full of hatred, jealousy, betrayals and hostility we have to find the seed of humanity and nurture it. It is our responsibility that we pass down to our children charity, kindness, empathy, respect for nature as a legacy. It is high time we instilled confidence that God has shown in us by bestowing upon us the most precious gift i.e. life. Don’t be the reason someone feels insecure. Be the reason someone feels seen, heard, and supported by the whole universe.

Dispel darkness, light a lamp.
Foster humanity, which is damp.
