Values are not taught; they are caught

T he process of learning is not just piling data on top of more data. It is one of obtaining new understandings and better ways of doing things. Those who get along in life never really stop studying and learning. The competent Engineer keeps-up with new ways. The good Athlete continually reviews the progress of his sport. The professional keeps a stack of his texts to hand and consults them often. It is the arrogant man who thinks that he has nothing to learn in life.

It is a dangerously blind individual who cannot discard his prejudices and false data and supplant them with facts and truths that can more fittingly assist his own life and everyone else’s. There are various methods to study so that one really learns and can use what he learns. It consists of having a teacher who understands what he is talking about. He teaches who is false from the true on the basis of what is now true for you. Tolerance is a good cornerstone on which to build human relationships. Happiness lies in engaging oneself in worthwhile activities. There is only one person who for certain can tell what will make one happy; that person is oneself.

Aristotle said “The way to achieve success is to have a definite, clear, practical ideal i.e. an objective. He must have the necessary means to achieve what he wants. Wisdom, money, materials and methods help a man to accomplish what he wants. Adjust everything to that end to reach the place he planned to reach”. The way to achieve success is to have a definite clear practical ideal, a goal, an objective. He should have the necessary means to reach the desired destination.

Change will either chain you to your past or free you to your future. Change brings opportunity. The trouble is that we can’t always recognise opportunities. We think that the way it should be is the way that it has always been in our lifetime. Vince Lombardi said: “If you can accept losing you can’t win. If you can walk you can run. No one is ever hurt because hurt is only in your mind.” We all admire successful people that is those who have overcome seemingly impossible odds to achieve their dreams. There is another level of people who seem to be semisuccessful. There are the people who attain a certain level of success in life and achieve more than the majority.

Zig Ziglar said: “Go as far as you can see and when you get there, you will always be able to see further. Highly successful people use what is called the CORRIDOR principle. The future is like a long corridor. There are doors on each side of the corridor but we can’t see them until we walk down the corridor. Highly successful people walk down the corridor even if they can’t see the doors. Their willingness to take the risk enables them to experience the highest degree of success.” Adversity is of benefit since it is sure to bring a season of sober reflection. Men see clearer at such times. Storms purify the atmosphere.

Look at a horse Race; the riders do not come to a sudden stop. There is a canter before coming to standstill. The race is over but the work and practice continuous. Happiness at the end of life requires some preparation. An assured income is not enough. One must accumulate friends. One must plan to maintain good health. Age is a quality of the mind. If you have left your dreams behind; if you no longer look ahead; if your ambitious fire is dead, then you can say that you are old. But if from life you can take your best and if in life you keep your humour then you are not old. Wrinkles are for the face and not for the Heart. Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind. Youth means courage over timidity with an appetite for adventure. Nobody grows old by living the number of years.

People really grow old by deserting their ideals. A man’s value is not measured by the years he has lived or even the work he has done. A man’s value is judged, is measured by the character he has moulded. Approach the twilight of life with joy and hope. Approach the last of life with eagerness and hope and never with gloom. Grow along forever because the best is yet to be.

We shall grow old but never lose life’s zest, because the roads last turn will be the best. Trim and shape yourself to the storm of time. We should measure life with our performance and not duration! Tougher the circumstance, better opportunities come along with it. That is how life creates a destiny! ■
