WITH an intention to provide healthy and fresh food to Railway passengers and to do away with present system of providing food through pantry car. West Central Railway (WCR) has started to construct ‘Base Kitchen’ at selected railway stations. In the first phase, Base Kitchens are being built in Bhopal and Itarsi Railway Stations. Food will be prepared under tight security in Base Kitchen.

CCTVs will be installed to monitor activities of cooks and cleanliness of Base Kitchen. As far as Bhopal Railway Base Kitchen is concerned then it has the capacity to supply food to 2,000 railway passengers in one go. As many as 48 trains including super fast trains passing through Bhopal station and Base Kitchen will look after food requirements of passengers of all these trains. The best part is that railway commuters will be getting food at a reasonable cost from Base Kitchen. It is fathomed that Base Kitchen of Bhopal will start functioning from January 2019.

“Bhopal Railway Station refreshment room is spacious and Base Kitchen is being set up there. Best efforts are being made to start functioning of kitchen by year end so that passengers get fresh, clean and delicious food at economical rates in all trains passing through Bhopal Station,” said IA Siddique, Public Relation Officer (PRO) Bhopal Division to ‘The Hitavada’. IA Siddique added that there will be modern machines, modified cooking wares and utensils to prepare food and keep it fresh and clean. Base Kitchen will be working entirely under CCTV surveillance and Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) will be monitoring the entire system. He said Base Kitchen is an initiative to shut down pantry car in trains.

Siddique said there is a proposal to use kitchen’s garbage to produce power. However, plan for power plant is still under planning. Notably, at present, there are lots of complaints about food served through pantry car in trains.
Railway passengers often complain about being served stale food and sometimes even insects are found floating in vegetables. Hence, this decision has been taken to replace pantry car with Base Kitchen system.
