IT IS ONLY apt that India’s Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi and French President Mr. Emmanuel Macron have been chosen for this year’s highest global environmental award by the United Nations Environment Programme. While Mr. Macron led the Paris talks on environmental protection agreement successfully, notwithstanding the bid by American President Mr. Donald Trump to sabotage it, Mr. Modi took the initiative to champion   international solar energy alliance as a global need and cause.

The United Nations Environment Programme has identified the two leaders among the six as the world’s most outstanding change makers. This is a recognition of the major leadership role Mr. Modi has been playing in tackling issues that needed global action. Despite the roadblocks being put by the US President these leaders have lent their weight and full energy in furthering the cause of environmental protection. In India, promotion of solar energy has been made a major mission under the leadership of the Prime Minister. It is worth emulating by other nations.

THE leadership model chosen by Australian cricket team -- Captain Tim Paine, to be backed by two Vice Captains, all-rounder Mitchell Marsh and fast bowler Josh Hazlewood -- will certainly make a new mark in international cricket. At a time when the Australian team is wanting to emerge from the cheating scandal that almost destroyed its morale, such an experiment with an expanded leadership team will work like a booster dose for the players.

Out in the middle, the Australians will now have three official leaders besides some unofficial ones to make decisions and blunt the effect of criticism on any one person who would be Captain. The cricketing merit of such decision is not known since this would be the first-of-its-kind trial in Australia. Considering the overall increased wisdom available to the team, a positive result can be expected. Australia, thus, has played a smart stroke  at a critical juncture when the team looked for a morale-booster. Reportedly, this was a collective decision that would fetch good outcome.
