An air of celebration prevailed once again on the shopfloor of SAIL-Bhilai’s 4 MTPA (million tonne per annum) Modex Facility of Steel Melting Shop 3 (SMS 3) today, on Sept 28 as blooms were cast from the third caster - the bloom cum billet caster - during successful hot trials. Blooms were continuously cast from all six strands of the caster smoothly and successfully – a remarkable feat achieved in the first hot trials itself.

The hot trials of the bloom cum billet caster of SMS III commenced in the afternoon of Sept 28 in presence of M Ravi, CEO, P K Dash, ED (Works), Kabisatpathy, ED (Projects), Devadas, GM (SMS 3), Ganeshmurthy, GM (Project-Steel), other General Managers and senior officers of the Plant, Projects-Steel Zone, SMS 3 Operations & Maintenance teams and all associated shops and agencies. Also present in large numbers to partake and witness the historic occasion were other members Projects Dept., SMS 3, other associated departments of Plant.

The state of the art caster has advanced features like EMS, Automatic Mould Level Control (AMLC), Slag Detection System, marking machine and debarring machine that are supplied by M/s Primetals, Austria. This caster will supply blooms to the Plant’s Universal Rail Mill for rolling of rails.

The hot trials are the culmination of years of hard work of the Projects and Operations team at SMS 3. It may be recalled that SMS 3 had been operationalized with the first heat taken from Converter 1 on March 31st. Subsequently, two billet casters of SMS 3 were operationalised in April and May 2018 with successful hot trials of Caster 1 taken on April 9th and successful hot trials of Caster 2 taken on May 10th.

M Ravi, CEO congratulated the entire Bhilai Collective, including the teams from Projects Dept., SMS 3 and members of other associated departments of the Plant, who have worked day and night along with representatives of technology and equipment suppliers and other contractual agencies involved in execution of the Project for this historic occasion and milestone achievement.

The pace of execution of different packages of the SMS 3 Modex Project has been accelerated under the present leadership of the Plant and Projects Department with project managers, engineers and technicians working round the clock along with contractual agencies. M Ravi, CEO and the entire top management team of BSP has been monitoring all activities of SMS 3 commissioning round the clock. Motivational level among members of the entire team working at SMS 3 is high and it is expected that hot trials of remaining units of the SMS 3 Modex would be taken up soon.
