A man murdered his wife and dumped the body in an overhead water tank at Traffic Park Dharampeth on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday. The body came to notice on Tuesday afternoon when a plumber went to rectify fault of water pump.

After investigation, Sitabuldi police arrested Raj Yadav (40) for killing his wife Chandrakala (38). Raj was native of Katni district of Madhya Pradesh. Chandrakala and Raj Yadav were managing the Sulabh Shauchalaya as caretakers since last two years, police said.

The relationship went sour when Raj started suspecting her fidelity. He used to quarrel with her under influence of liquor and also beat her mercilessly. Chandrakala's leg was amputated due to Gangrene last year. She also used to consume liquor with her husband since a year, police investigation revealed.

On Saturday night, Chandrakala and Raj were consuming liquor in the hutment near Sulabh Shauchalaya. An argument ensued between the two. Raj got furious when Chandrakala abused him. Police said, both slapped each other during the fight. Raj attacked her with a wooden rod and she fell unconscious. Raj who was dead drunk did not suspect anything amiss and went to sleep. During that time Chandrakala seems to have breathed her last. On waking up during wee hours of Sunday, Raj noticed that Chandrakala had died. He packed the body in a gunny bag and dumped it in the overhead water tank at around 4 am. The water tank was empty because water pump was malfunctioning since last two days.

A police officer informed that Raj was living normal life after committing the murder. When someone asked about Chandrakala, he would coolly answer that she had gone to her parent's place. The murder came to fore on Tuesday afternoon when a plumber went to check the water tank after rectifying fault of water pump.

The moment he opened the cover of the water tank, he was taken aback by foul smell emanating from the tank. They noticed a gunny bag in the tank and the smell was emanating from it. Suspecting something amiss, the plumber alerted the police. A team of Sitabuldi police reached the spot and opened the gunny bag and noticed body of Chandrakala. They later arrested Raj Yadav. Sitabuldi police have registered the case under Sections 302 and 201 of Indian Penal Code.
