Need to recognise potential of co-operative sector: Satish Marathe

IT IS not only the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) but even the policy makers have failed to recognise the potential of co-operative sector properly, said Satish Marathe, newly appointed Director of RBI.

Marathe was speaking at the felicitation programme organised by Sahakar Bharati, Vidarbha Region on Wednesday at Shikshak Sahakari Sabhagruha. The chief guest on the occasion was Mayor Nanda Jichkar, while other guests were Satish Gupt, Chairman, The Chikhali Urban Co-operative Bank Limited and Secretary, Vidarbha Urban Co-operative Bank Association, Anil Sole, MLC and Chairman, Shikshak Sahakari Bank, Sanjay Bhende, Chairman, Nagpur Nagrik Sahakari Bank and Director of Maharashtra State Co-operative Bank Ltd, Atul Moghe, Sahakaryawahak, RSS, Vidarbha Region, Ashish Choubisa, President, Vidarbha Region of Sahakar Bharati and Nilkant Devangan, Organising Secretary of Sahakar Bharati, Maharashtra State.

Marathe added: “Co-operatives are economic enterprises which the Government has not yet noticed. Some think it as a business enterprise for profit organisations, partnership firms or charitable trusts. Even the motto of co-operatives is not service and charity, but a not-for-profit organisation.”

Marathe, who is the founder member of Sahakar Bharti and also holds a long experience of working in banking and co-operative sector on various levels said, “Planners and policy makers failed to recognise importance and potential of co-operative sector. It is the least understood sector hence, their is no policy to promote co-operatives by the policy makers.” Marathe opined that for development of co-operative sector, expert interaction with various agencies must be initiated for which joint efforts by all was required.

Marathe, patron of Sahakar Bharati, is also Vice-Chairman of governing body of the newly constituted Laxmanrao Inamdar National Academy for Cooperative Research and Development (LINAC). The Academy will be finding new areas, give consultancy and look for capacity building of co-operatives, he informed. “There are 8.5 lakh co-operatives in the country out of which 5.5 lakh are active societies for which LINAC will be working,” Marathe said.
He suggested that for the growth of co-operative sector, through different forums, the work of co-operative sector in income and employment generation must come out. The co-operatives must also highlight their social welfare activities and advocate their contribution to the society also.

Mayor Nanda Jichkar felicitated Marathe with a ‘Pagdi’, shawl, shreefal, citation and memento. In her address she said, “I came into politics under the guidance of leaders in co-operative sector like Sole and Bhende.”

Satish Gupt hoped that with the appointment of Marathe, issues of co-operatives will be well addressed. “It’s an honour for all of us as one among us like Marathe is appointed as the Director of the apex bank,” Gupt said. Ashish Choubisa made the welcome remark.

The programme was conducted by Vivek Jugade while Anil Joshi proposed the vote of thanks. Marathe was also felicitated by office-bearers of various societies and urban banks from all over the region. The programme was attended by large number of people from co-operative sector from all over the region.
